Protect Australia's wildlife from the threats of today. Prepare them for the challenges of tomorrow.

You can help do both.

This summer will be hard on Australia's Koalas.

The Bureau of Meteorology has declared an El Niño. Hotter, drier, with a greater risk of extreme weather.

Koalas are already under pressure from habitat fragmentation, feral predators and inappropriate fire regimes. Summer is when those pressures compound.

Koalas are present across AWC’s network of sanctuaries, most notably at our newly acquired Mongo Valley Wildlife Sanctuary on Bundjalung Country in New South Wales and Waulinbakh Wildlife Sanctuary, on the lands of the Worimi Nation.

There, our audio surveys have recorded Koala bellows right across the eucalypt forests. If you have never heard one, it is low and guttural, like it is coming from an animal several times the size. For an animal listed as Endangered in Queensland, New South Wales, and the Australian Capital Territory since 2022, it’s a deeply encouraging sign.

We cannot stop what this summer will bring, but together, we can give Koalas and other threatened species the best possible chance of getting through it.

That is the difference you will make.

The impact of your support

Assessing the land

Before AWC buys land, our scientists assess it against a range of climate variables, average conditions and extremes, to test whether it can still provide viable habitat for wildlife for generations to come.

When AWC takes on a sanctuary, we commit for the long term. That means the decisions we make today have to hold for a century.

Monitoring ecosystems in our care

AWC conducts an extensive program of ecological health monitoring and scientific research to inform conservation action across our network of sanctuaries and partnership areas.

Motion-sensor cameras, bioacoustic recorders and vegetation surveys, season after season, build a picture of which animals are already there, which have gone locally extinct, and what threats they face. At Mongo Valley, that work is under way now.

Restore and protect the landscape.

Before any threatened species can come home, the land has to be ready for it. Feral cats and foxes are the greatest drivers of mammal extinction in Australia, and AWC manages mainland Australia's largest network of feral cat and fox-free safe havens.

Weeds are cleared, grazing pressure is reduced, and fire is carefully managed to protect the habitats wildlife depend on.

Reintroducing species

Only when the land is ready can the reintroduction work begin. AWC's program spans 10 locations and has founded populations of more than 20 mammal species across the country.

At Mt Gibson Wildlife Sanctuary in Western Australia, AWC has returned 10 threatened mammal species to the landscape, and eight are now established or on track to viable populations. It took 15 years.

Beyond this summer

Bird flu has reached Australia and it has already spread beyond birds into mammals. Among those at risk is the Northern Quoll.
Our response is to manage every other threat as well as we can, so that when the virus reaches a population, it finds one stronger than it would otherwise have been. That is what a sanctuary is for.
Bird flu makes this work, and your support, more urgent.

AWC is implementing a science-based model for conservation that delivers high-impact results. We are successfully halting the decline of threatened wildlife and restoring species across our network of sanctuaries and partnership areas. Our Ecohealth reports outline the high ecological return on investment we are achieving across Australia.

Your support is delivering effective conservation land management, restoring threatened and locally extinct species and enabling monitoring of the ecosystems in our care.

All donations made to Australian Wildlife Conservancy will be used at its discretion to support the effective conservation of all Australian native animal species and the habitats in which they live.

For more information on how your gift is used, please view our latest Impact Report.

What supporters are saying

Today AWC’s reserves up and down the continent are looked after by teams of Australians who on occasion have to endure extremely harsh conditions. Sometimes they have to deal with very real dangers from fire, from predators and from many other crises. But they have shown us all, repeatedly and dramatically, that if we take care of nature, nature will take care of us. Long may AWC flourish!

Sir David Attenborough

AWC’s aims and actions matter to me – removing and excluding feral animals and plants and then fencing those areas, reintroducing the original fauna (rewilding), restoring habitat and using strategic mosaic burning to reduce intense wildfires. What AWC is doing is so different from any organisation I’ve come across in Australia. They get the science right and consistently follow up.

Patricia Novikoff
AWC supporter and Copley Circle Member

I have a deep connection with AWC's purpose and goals, so a monthly gift is an easy way for me to regularly contribute to the important work that AWC is doing to protect and preserve Australia's unique landscapes, flora and fauna. It also keeps me in touch with AWC so I can learn more about what the organisation is accomplishing. I then feel more connected to the purpose which is very special to me. Making a monthly gift is a very easy process. By making a regular gift, I feel like part of the team, on a mission of great importance.
